Robert H Lewis

From the Bakersfield Californian: Robert "Bobby" H.L. Lewis, 1949 - 2009

Robert "Bobby" H.L. Lewis, wonderful father, dedicated son, beloved brother, and magnificent teacher, passed away on April 5, 2009, from natural causes.

Bobby was born on September 6, 1949, in Munich, Germany. He was the eldest son of two born to Donald L. Lewis of Arkansas and Elizabeth C.W. Lewis of Germany.  In addition, he was a brother to Nora Lee Hays, born to Donald L. Lewis and Juanita Lewis (Hays).

He leaves behind two beautiful children, Patrick, 19,  and Jocelyn, 17, his loving mother and brother, Ernie, as well as many relatives and friends who dearly love him.

Bobby was a  caring man who opened his heart to all. He kept a steady demeanor , no matter what the situation.  He came to the United States in 1955 and lived in Missouri until 1966 when his family moved to Bakersfield, California, after his father retired from the United States Army.

As a teenager, Bobby performed with a number of rock bands, including Brand X  and the Strawberry Alarm Clock  in Bakersfield.  He also played at enlisted men's clubs in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was a polished guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist.

He graduated from South High School, Bakersfield College and CSUB where he majored in Art and received a BA. Later, he returned to CSUB and acquired his resource specialist certification.

Bobby worked for his family at service stations until 1981, and on August 31st of that year, Bobby began his teaching career for the Arvin Union School District, both as a regular classroom teacher and a resource specialist. Throughout those years, he touched the lives of many students and colleagues.

He was also an active member of the Golden Empire Bass Club of Bakersfield. For years, he served as the raffle person.  He enjoyed being active in the club.

Though we will celebrate his life during his service, we will also know in our hearts that the world has lost a kind-hearted, all around "good guy."  He will be truly missed but continually loved.

Interment at Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery on Panama Lane.
