From the Bakersfield Californian: John Russell Otterness, 1949 - 1996

John graduated from South High School in l968, was in the Marine Corp Reserves, worked for Alpha Beta and for 15 years worked for Bernard and Sons Meats. John was very active in community sports and was an avid fisherman. He looked forward to the family annual fishing trip held at Grays Meadows, but most of all John enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

John is survived by his mother and father Jack and Phyliss Otterness of Running Springs; wife Valerie of Bakersfield; daughter Christy and husband Heath Scoggins of Bakersfield; sons, John, Brett and Justin Otterness all of Bakersfield; stepdaughter, Lacey Byron of Fresno; grandson, Austin Scoggins of Bakersfield; sisters Lynna Aberg and husband Gary of Running Springs, Debbie Darr and husband Mike of Corona, Dede Jackson and husband Dave of Bakersfield; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, and many friends.
