In Memory

Alan Zachary

Alan Zachary

From the Bakersfield Californian, portions of Alan Zachary's obituary:

Alan Lloyd Zachary "Zack" 2/27/1950 - 4/20/2012

Born to James and Marcelline Zachary. He grew up in Northern California until 1966 when his family moved to Bakersfield. He attended South High, where he was active in many sports. This, too, is where he met the love of his life, Peggy Whittemore. Alan graduated South in 1968 and attended Bakersfield College. He and Peggy were married in 1969 and from that union had two daughters, Joey and Jennifer.

He began his successful career with the Bakersfield Police Department in 1971 as a 21 year old foot beat officer. He worked his way up, holding various positions, and was promoted to Detective in 1976, working primarily in Vice/Narcotics unit. He was later promoted to Sergeant and then began supervising in the Internal Affairs Unit. After suffering and recovering from a heart attack in 1989, rather than retire, he returned to work and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. At the time of his retirement in 2003 he was Lt. In charge of Internal Affairs. One recurring comment his peers and subordinates made in describing their feeling about Alan was  that "he cared about his officers and always took care of them".

Alan enjoyed a variety  of outside hobbies and activities, including riding his Harley. He had a great sense of humor and an accepting nature.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Peggy; daughter Joey Zachary and grandson Gavin Zachary; daughter, Jennifer and husband Jason Cantrell and grandchildren Jackson and Romy.

Services and entombment were at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Bakersfield.

I knew Alan Zachary to be an upstanding guy always and my husband worked with Alan on many occasions. He and his wife, Peggy and their girls' were blessed, indeed, to have such a man in their lives. Rest In Peace Alan.
