In Memory

Roger Avila

Roger Avila

Roger Jerome Avila was born in Bakersfield on June 30, 1950 and passed away in 2016 in Tennessee.  He apparently married Anita Graham in 1970, in Kern County.  We've been told that he died of throat cancer.

Roger was a good friend. He married Anita Graham in February 21,1970 moving to Arryo Grande. They had two children Jonathan, and Paul. They divorced in the late 1970's. A few years went by before Roger married Linda Bruyneel, and adopted her daughter Patty, and son Dennis.. The last time I saw him was about 1980.  Both Roger and his wives were Jehovah's Witnesses, and as such did seek fame and fortune. Roger was the most joyful person, always smiling and happy.

Dear Roger

I always remembered you fondly as such a good person. Funny I always wondered if you were connected to the original Avila's here on the coast. Here I find  you lived close but I had no idea. I pray you are happy, whole and rejoicing in the next realm. Ethel

I recall Roger well.  He was one of the smarter ones in our class.  I believe that John Oberg was a friend of Roger's, and that led to me befriending Roger.

He was always exceptionally positive in everything he said or did.  Never heard a harsh word from him.  I can picture his high school face so well in my mind.

He was on the small side as a high school student so we did not meet out on the athletic field.

But somehow, I remember exactly what he was all about.  We must have had lunch period together at some point.  Else, how could I remember Roger so perfectly well?  I always thought that he would be in the "top five" of any list that evauated the content and accomplishments of a person from our class.  He may well have achieved that.  But there are few facts about Roger's life available, at the momet.

Roger and I were good buddies at Wayside elementary. He use to live off of so. Chester ave. I think there use to be a railroad track crossing near there. I use to run over to his house Sunday mornings and we use to sell the Sunday morning newspaper door to door around the
neighborhood. Collected chicken eggs in his backyard. He was a funny kid. Liked to joke around.
For whatever reason, I don't remember hanging out with him after Wayside. Funny how friendships changed in the transitions from elementary to junior high to high school.
I would have liked to have seen him again.
R.I.P old friend

You're right Alan, the Avilas' house was just north of the tracks facing the canal. We spent several afternoons taking the long way home, often on the canal and sometimes with a pocket full of sunflower seeds if we had a nickel between us to spend at the malt shop. We knew every hole in the fence and used it as needed, one time to avoid a beating by some older boys who caught us rifling through their pornography collection. Rodger was a kind, quiet, and fun loving kid and I would doubt that he grew up to be anything different. I'm sure we would have liked the man he became.

57 years ago on Sadie Hawkins Day.  Great photo.  Life was simpler then.
