Herb, such a brilliant mind and kind spirit. I am appreciative of your wisdon, kindness and tenacity to get through the high school experience with such brilliance and to serve others in your chosen field. Glad to hear you had some time to be creative before leaving us. Ethel

I remember Herbert also, as being very kind, always and extremely smart. Sounds like he had a good life.

Dear Herbert was a good friend, and we were in the same homerooms from 5-6th grade at Franklin and 7-8th grade at Golden State. We shared a lot of classes in High School too. I lost contact with him a few years after we left high school, and kept hoping to see him at a reunion, especially our 50th. But I found out in the past year that he had died in 2009- RIP my friend.

Herbert Jung MURRIETA -- Herbert Jung passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 30, 2009. He was born December 14, 1950 in Bakersfield, California, son of Jack and Penny (Ng) Jung. Herbert attended local schools in Bakersfield and was active in sports and student body government at South High School, where he graduated in 1968. In 1968, he was awarded a full scholarship to Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., where he graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Sociology in 1972. Herbert later attended law school at Washington University School of Law, Clayton, Mo., where he was an Associate Editor of the Law Review, and he graduated with a J.D. in 1976. During law school, he worked for the State of Illinois Appellate Defender's Office, writing and arguing appeals in criminal cases. Following his admittance to the California State Bar in 1976, he moved to Santa Monica and later to La Crescenta, where he practiced Civil Defense Law in Los Angeles for Ives, Kirwin and Dibble until his retirement. During his law career, Herbert argued civil and criminal cases before both the Illinois State Supreme Court and the California State Supreme Court. After much discussion with Rick Short, Ethel Wimsett, Susan Edwards (Maybee), Mike Martin, Maxine Schmidt and others, we made the determination that Herb was the valedictorian of the class.  However, he apparently did not feel comfortable giving the customary Valedictorian address at our commencement ceremony on June 6, 1968.  As I recall (and the program states), Rick and Maxine read a short poem at the ceremony in place of the address.  Feel free to correct these 50 year old memories.  By the way, I knew Herbert in 3rd grade at Franklin elementary in 1959.  As kids, we were best of friends.

Third grade is a long time ago, so my memory is not perfect.  However, I recall the reason that Herb joined me in third grade was that he had just been promoted ("skipped") up from second grade a couple months into the year. He was too smart for the second graders. Notice that his birth date is early December, 1950, which actually put him in the class of 1969!  The "official" date range for our class was December 1, 1949, through November 30, 1950.  That's why Herbert Jung was one of the youngest kids in our class of 1968.  He entered a big-time Ivy League university at the tender age of 17.
